Choose The Right Cabinet Hardware

August 9, 2009 – 10:50 pm

Cabinet hardware gives the last touch to your kitchen. It might seem like an unimportant detail, but it is not. A good design needs these touches of style, they are what makes a design appealing and differentiate it from the rest. Cabinet hardware will add continuity to your kitchen, and in certain cases even to your whole home.

There are plentiful of choices. Depending on the desired look, you might choose between sleek, modern, conservative, solid cabinet hardware and much more. If you are not installing a complete new kitchen, but just remodeling an old one, your choices might be limited to the design.

First you’ll need to consider that not every piece of cabinet hardware fits in every cabinet. The earlier footprint will determine what you can choose, since it has to fit in the old hole. That applies, obviously, to all knobs, hinges and pulls.

Another element, which might also limit your choices, is the sinks, appliances and faucets. If for example, they are of stainless steel, then you probably should only consider stainless steel cabinet hardware. If they are of painted metal in red, white or whatever color, then you should go for cabinet hardware in red, white or whatever color.

However, don’t choose the new cabinet hardware only based on appearance. An intricate design might be beautiful, but difficult to clean. If you are not the kind of person who has many hours to spend cleaning the kitchen (and who has actually?) then think about it before you buy.

Consider also if someone in your home has any medical condition, which debilitates them. People with Parkinson or arthritis often cannot use well certain kinds of small knobs.

Finally, go for good material. This almost excludes plastic, but not necessarily. There is also quality plastic cabinet hardware; the only problem is that most cheap cabinet hardware is made of plastic.

Prices vary widely, depending on all variables above, but also depending from other factors. Material and design are the two more important facts that push the price up. Buying online may save you a lot of money. Buying from unknown companies may save you more, and often they don’t have lower quality. Since it is difficult to find replacement or order additional cabinet hardware, decide first what you need and buy it all at once. Some people install matching cabinet hardware across their home and not only in the kitchen.  One of the most common times to change out the hardware is when people look at cabinet refacing or replacing.

Why Cabinet Hardware is Important

August 9, 2009 – 10:08 pm

Pulls and knobs are a tiny part of the kitchen. However, they make a huge difference in the design of it. A cabinet is only a surface; the cabinet hardware is the touch of design that makes the difference.

It gives your kitchen personality, since many cabinets are alike, but the combination of cabinet and cabinet hardware makes the difference. Depending on the material and style that you choose, you’ll get the desired effect.

Don’t save a couple of dollars buying low quality pulls and knobs. Only when one breaks down, you’ll know that it was a bad choice. Substituting single pulls or knobs is a daunting task. It is almost impossible to find an exactly equal piece of cabinet hardware. No matter how hard you search for it or how much you would pay for it, equal cabinet hardware replacements are difficult to find.

A similar problem, but one that can be fixed at home, are pulls and knobs that have lost their shine. If you bought plastic cabinet hardware (the cheapest and worst) and want to re-paint it, use a special paint for this purpose. In any case, it is highly advisable to change them for quality cabinet hardware, which will last for many years. In this case, you can see again the importance of buying quality cabinet hardware from the beginning. Stainless steel or ceramic won’t lose their shine, even many years after you bought them. They keep their appearance and functionality under any condition. It is hard to see a broken or damaged stainless steel piece of cabinet hardware.

If you are thinking about new handles, pulls or knobs, remember that they should fit your cabinets. They are easy to install and won’t take you more than half an hour replacing the whole kitchen. Getting a new look, without spending a lot of money in new furniture, can be easily accomplished with a package of quality cabinet hardware. Go shopping and you’ll see that somewhere on the Internet, someone will sell you exactly what you needed for your kitchen.

Additionally, you could also change all the pulls, knobs and handles of your home. There is no need to restrict yourself to the kitchen. You could choose a thread and use it across your home. At least, choose a specific color and give small touches around your home in this color.  A slightly unique option to pulls and knobs is stained glass, you at least owe it to yourself to take a look.

Normally, the only thing you’ll need is a screwdriver, a little bit of money and some time.

Cleaning and Shining Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

August 7, 2009 – 12:32 am

In almost all kitchens, pulls and knobs will get dirty pretty fast. This is simply due to the normal use of the kitchen. We are constantly touching the kitchen cabinet hardware with dirty or grease fingers. Bringing their shine back is, however, an easy task. This is one task that can change the appearance of the kitchen.

Remove the kitchen cabinet hardware

Removing them may be important since this will prevent damaging. Some cleansers are aggressive to wood. Actually most of them should not come in contact with a surface unless the manufactured explicitly specified that it is for this kind of surface. Removing them is also important to clean behind the handle. There is always some grime in the back of it. Any screwdriver will suffice to remove almost any kitchen cabinet hardware. Mostly it should not be more complicated than screwing two or even one screw.

Washing the kitchen cabinet hardware

Most materials can be completely soaked in water with any kind of cleanser. The easiest choice is soap, and this choice will be enough for cabinet hardware of any private kitchen. Restaurant kitchens will need perhaps something stronger than soap, since they tend to accumulate more grime and gunk.

For materials like metal, porcelain and glass, finding and using a strong cleanser should not be a huge problem. You can also use an old toothbrush for more difficult buildups of gunk or for places that are harder to reach.

Some kitchen cabinet knobs are made of wood. Be a little more careful in this case and use a rag to clean them.

Wash and rinse with clean water at the end. Wait until they are dry or dry them with a towel. This last choice will also make them shine up.

Once the cabinet hardware is off, also clean the cabinet itself, since grim also tend to build up behind the knob or pull.

Polishing the cabinet hardware is mostly not necessary. Most pieces will shine when they are clean. However, some metal pieces need to be polished with a special product. There are also general metal polishes designed for most any metal. This can also removes rust or tarnishing.

Maintaining your cabinet hardware serves a purpose. Not only will they look good, but they will last longer. Although these are perhaps the cheapest element in your kitchen, it is extremely difficult to find an equal replacement for a broken piece.
